Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi’i, the linguist and writer (d. 204 AH)

Abstract

There is an aspect of Imam al-Shafi'i's scholarly personality that has not received its due attention: the linguistic and literary side of this eminent Imam's life. This is an attempt to shed light on this aspect, given the abundance of accounts and narratives on the subject, which require further investigation and analysis, and perhaps even a dedicated study. This is because it concerns a great imam, one of the leading figures of the faith, who was "like the sun to the world, and like health to people," as the saying goes.

This research is structured around two sections: The first section introduces Imam al-Shafi'i, including his name, lineage, upbringing, attributes, virtues, and his approach to seeking knowledge. The second section examines his language, eloquence, examples of his linguistic arguments, his literary personality, and his poetic talent.

I hope I have succeeded in writing about this topic and added something new that will benefit all those interested in the biography of Imam al-Shafi'i and in linguistic and literary studies in general.
